“The Mysterious Islands”: Review & Giveaway!

In “The Mysterious Islands,” naturalist Doug Phillips shows viewers and his 16-year-old son, Joshua, the incredible flora and fauna of the Galapagos Islands. Along with researcher Dr. John Morris and filmmakers Jon and Andy Erwin, they walk the beaches and meadows that Charles Darwin explored when he traveled to the islands on the H.M.S. Beagle 150 years before.
The film shows the interesting and sometimes unbelievable animals of the Galapagos in all their wild glory. Marine iguanas spew salt water, sea lions exhibit remarkable curiosity about their human visitors and blue-footed boobies survey the ocean alongside bright red Sally Lightfoot crabs.
As Phillips discusses the scientific basis for intelligent design, he presents evidence of Darwin’s worldview – and of the notions he conceived before the Beagle dropped anchor – in a compelling argument about the origin of species. As Darwin’s bias against intelligent design is presented, Phillips also readily notes his own beliefs, without apology and without any indication that his faith in God undermines his scientific pursuits. In fact, it is easy to see Phillips’ excitement as he encounters the wonders of creation at every turn. For him, the depth and breadth of life on the Galapagos strengthens his faith.
In the end, the story of the Galapagos leaves little middle ground. A leap of faith is required for either argument – a common ancestry in primordial soup or creation by the hands of an omnipotent God. Rarely are the flaws in Darwin’s ideas presented in such a concise, methodical way and in that, Phillips succeeds.
“The Mysterious Islands” is visually stunning, but not appropriate for very young children, unless parents view it first and are prepared to use the “skip” button judiciously. One segment of the film discusses eugenics and shows still photos from the Holocaust which might be too disturbing for children, but it is a great addition to any Christian family’s DVD collection.
