“Your Backyard” by Crowe’s Nest Media Giveaway–Closed!!

What’s that sound?

“Your Backyard” turns a bird’s song into so much more

Teakettle, teakettle, teakettle.

Living in South Carolina, I hear that sound – the call of the Carolina wren – often, but honestly, I am not very good at distinguishing the calls of other birds.

Thanks to “Your Backyard” by Crowe’s Nest Media, a beginner’s guide to identifying 18 birds found in the eastern and central United States, I am learning. The video is for all ages, though it is aimed at the youngest audience. I watched it with my 12-year-old, and though some of the content was a little young for him, we both learned more about the birds that are right outside our window. The visuals are lovely and the peaceful sounds will almost lull viewers to sleep – but this is more than a nature study. “Your Backyard” includes a bit of history as well, and a wonderful (yet subtle) lesson in the value of listening to elders. And since viewers learn to identify birds by both sight and sound, the possibilities for lessons and nature games are endless.

I highly recommend this video as an addition to your homeschool library and as terrific family viewing. Throughout the lessons on bird identification, children are reminded that each bird, each song and each adaptation were created by God to fill our backyards with a diverse population of animals.

This video is also a solid starting point for creating a backyard wildlife habitat or setting up a feeder station for bird study. Nature study is valuable and adaptable for all ages, and “Your Backyard” can serve as a resource children will use again and again.

One lucky winner will receive a copy of “Your Backyard”, the DVD.
