3 Resources to Bring Geography to Life

Daily Geography is a reproducible book with 36 weekly lessons each including: teacher resource page, geography vocabulary, reproducible map, 2 daily geography questions, challenge question and answer key. Published by Evan-Moor this 144 page book is available by grade level (1-5 and 6+). The back half of the book is filled with transparencies which would probably not be of use to homeschool teachers. While some of the questions seem more like “busy work” the two grade levels I reviewed did cover important geography skills and the daily questions could easily be done verbally with a few other questions thrown in for good measure. The illustrations are clear and interesting and if you have multiple students, the reproducible format offers a cost savings.
Amazing Hands-on Map Activities (Grades 3-6) by Scholastic has 17-hands on map activities including: salt-dough relief maps, landform lids, and paper mache globes that will really interest your visual and hands-on project motivated learners. Also included are several extension ideas, book suggestions and websites to incorporate with this study or use as additional resources, if you wish. The ideas illustrated in this book are extremely appealing and educational, but they do require considerable preparation time and the purchase of some materials which you may not already have in your home. This book would work best as a supplement to an existing geography curriculum.
Literature Based Map Skills is divided into five books: Northeast United States, Middle West United States, Southwest/Alaska/Hawaii, West United States and Latin America & the Caribbean. Suggested for grades 1-3 this unique geography study incorporates children’s books. With this study you can help your child locate the settings of their favorite stories and build their map skills at the same time! The book is clearly outlined to aide the teacher. Each two-page teaching guide includes: a summary of the book, a kinesthetic introductory map activity, step-by-step directions for using the student maps and developing map skills, a thinking skill based on the student map or story’s geography, related curriculum activities.
