Alphamania – A Review

Recently I had the opportunity to review Cindy A. Johnson’s book: Alphamania: An Alphabet Resource for Teachers and Parents. Johnson compiled this new book based upon her experience while teaching kindergarten. The book is meant to help those teaching in the classroom, Sunday school, and home educators. Alphamania provides a plethora of exciting ways to teach the alphabet and reinforce existing skills to your child ages 2-6. The book is designed to teach one letter per week allowing for multiple activities for maximum comprehension.

In addition to learning the alphabet your child will be exposed to:

-art
-health
-safety
-science
-geography
-social studies
-history
-language arts
-mathematics
-music
-literature

Johnson has come up with a very beautifully executed concept for this book using the following categories to teach and reinforce alphabet recognition:

-Crafty Creations: arts and crafts projects with easy instructions and inexpensive materials

-Activities: games, experiments, indoor/outdoor exploration, dress up, etc.

-Tiny Tastes: making foods that begin with the letter being studied that week

-Special Guests and/or Road Trips: an opportunity to take field trips beginning with the letter you are -studying that week

-What to Watch: watching movies, cartoons, or television shows that correspond to the letter of the week

-What to Read: are a from the authors favorite books over the years.

-Letter Stretchers: word prompts that begin with the letter of study meant to inspire further study

-Where on Earth is…?: studying a country or place beginning with the letter of the week

-Musical Notes: songs to listen or sing to that relate to the letter of the week

This unique and thorough approach to teaching the alphabet is keeping our youngest child (3-year-old son) engaged in a very new way. He has begun to have a new excitement for learning his letters and it has inspired him to really enjoy handwriting too. The combination of tools and ideas gives this a new twist to the way I have taught this concept to our two older children. It is a great resource for any homeschooling parent that needs some fresh and new inspiration while teaching the alphabet to their child and I highly recommend this book for your homeschool.
