Each year we like to go apple picking together as a family. It’s a great time to get out into God’s beautiful world and remind the children about the harvest, to be thankful for the food we have to eat, and to explain how God created seed-bearing plants (Gen 1:29) as a way of provision for us.
- count apple seeds
- cut apples in half and paint with the apple halves
- draw a picture of an apple tree
- take photographs while apple picking
- go to library and search for books about apples
- apple acrostic poems
- dehydrate apples
- make applesauce
- make apple dumplings
Here is a recipe for apple dumplings that my children’s Grandmother gave them. We like to go apple picking in the morning, come home and sort and wash the apples, and make apple dumplings that afternoon. Everyone helps out with the picking, cleaning, cooking, and of course eating!
Apple Dumplings
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 3/4 cups water
- 1 Tbsp. nutmeg
- 1 Tbsp. cinnamon
- Boil and simmer for 5 minutes.
