Apple Dumplings

Each year we like to go apple picking together as a family. It’s a great time to get out into God’s beautiful world and remind the children about the harvest, to be thankful for the food we have to eat, and to explain how God created seed-bearing plants (Gen 1:29) as a way of provision for us.

Here is a recipe for apple dumplings that my children’s Grandmother gave them. We like to go apple picking in the morning, come home and sort and wash the apples, and make apple dumplings that afternoon. Everyone helps out with the picking, cleaning, cooking, and of course eating!

Apple Dumplings

1. Make pie crust and set aside (store bought is fine)
2. Peel and core apples. Once the apples are peeled and cored, cut out a square of pie dough that is large enough to wrap around the apple. Arrange the apples in a baking dish.
3. Make the Syrup.
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 3/4 cups water
  • 1 Tbsp. nutmeg
  • 1 Tbsp. cinnamon
  • Boil and simmer for 5 minutes.
4.  Pour syrup over the dumplings and bake for 45 minutes in a 350 degree oven.
5.  Serve warm and with ice cream.
