I am with Melody on this. I am not sure how to read this article. If it is addressing INTEGRITY, good. We are to walk in TRUTH. In my home, hypocrisy and pretending is not how we operate. Any one of my friends and even strangers can stop by any time and what they see is what they get. If we are that secure in our identity as parents who educate their children at home, we know who we give account to at the end of the day. I have nothing to hide, nothing to show off and nobody to impress. Nowhere does God call us to 'perfection' but He does ask for excellence. It is important to keep things in perspective. Bad is bad, Good is good, don't get confused between the two. It is fine to admit that we are all human and laugh at our mistakes but what is our ultimate goal? Shouldn't it be to glorify God Almighty? Whatever you do work at it with all your heart and do it for the Lord not for men! Colossians 3:23

I am not perfect, my home doesn't look like a museum, but there is discipline and structure in our home. There are expectations that are to be met. There is a bar, and goals are to be set, strived for, and achieved. I have one graduated, one 12th grade, that has been accepted to SEVERAL colleges, and one 10th grade child. If they were not taught discipline, structure, boundaries, expectations and respect, they will never make it in college and life. Home schooling is just a part of life in our home, and raising children is not a cake walk......not if you are doing it right :-)

Oh I love this post.
We at the moment are very similar in our lessons. Life is just intruding, but then that is how I belive Home schooing should be.
Seasons come and go and we adjust to what is happening.
God Bless

We have four kids, with the oldest just starting kindergarten this year. It is so good to hear from someone that things can be slightly out of control (in a mostly controlled way, of course) and the schooling still gets done. I feel so overwhelmed with the one schooling, the potty trainer, and the baby (plus the freshly four year old!)!!

A big thank you for being so honest! It is so hard sometimes to not compare myself to other home school Moms that seem to have it all together: house perfect, school done by noon, laundry done and all is great. I was talking to a friend today who passed on this article and it was just what I needed for this moment.

I think sometimes a homeschool mom's worst enemy can be other homeschool moms...we don't mean to be that way, but we tend to look around and measure our homeschools to other homeschools. The problem with that is that no one's going to openly admit that their homeschooling experience is less than sublime...no one is completely honest, so we get a false measurement. I'm for honesty, bravo for yours. we need to measure up by God and His Holy Word...that's the only way.

I'm not sure how I feel about this article. I guess because I actually AM one of those home school Moms that tells people how awesome homeschooling is AND I really, truthfully, DO have my act together. I'm an exception to the rule here I guess that's what it is. And I'm actually being honest with you...if you showed up at my home, everything is pretty perfect and not in a bad way.
That's all I wanted to say, that I'm an exception here, and that's not a bad thing at all either. If there are any other home school Mother's out there who have their act together please speak up so other Mom's can know that it CAN be done and it IS being done. I know 4-5 Mothers personally who I can show up at their homes any time of time and find a pretty perfect home (what most would call "perfect" I mean). It can be done.

Always a joy to read, Amy, and always timely. You're right; sometimes we have such overinflated images of what is going on at others' homes, when the truth is that we all struggle in some way. I do cook a full breakfast on most days, but our kids don't exactly come running to the table when I say, "Time for school," either. Thanks for the reassurance--we've had a not-so-spectacular start to what started as a great summer plan.

:) That's hilarious! :) Smart kids. SMART!

I always want to check in people's homeschool lives and see how they really live. I know we could never be uber-structured because things are too crazy and imperfect here!
