Bethany has been married for 16 years, homeschooling for 9 years, and organizing forever. She homeschools her two girls, grade 6 and grade 10, in North Carolina. She is also a partner in Codex Publishing, publisher of The Tutor and classic book reprints. When she isn’t homeschooling or driving the family taxi, Bethany enjoys reading, music, church activities, editing, writing, history, and keeping up with friends.
Here’s the rest of the stuff you really wanted to know: Our homeschool journey started even before I realized we were on that path. When my oldest daughter was three, and my youngest daughter was an infant, we moved to a church that had many homeschooling families. They showed me different ways of teaching children to read and other little helps, and before I knew it, I had taught my oldest to read at the age of four. She turned five and it was officially time for kindergarten, so what was I going to teach her then? Colors? On to first grade at age five! The rest just fell into place . . . until about half way through fourth grade. We had so many personal and family issues that year that I couldn’t deal with her obstinate attitude in school, so we put her in a Christian school. A move five states away, a year’s trial at a different classical Christian school with the younger daughter begging to come home again, and a job teaching music at said Christian school later, we decided that home was where we all belonged. Despite moments of occasional head banging, home is where we are happiest and where we intend to stay.
We’re now in our tenth year of homeschooling and I find, much to my surprise, that I am considered a veteran. Early on in our homeschool journey, I was introduced to the classical method. I instantly loved everything about it and have employed its methods ever since, although I also appreciate the many opportunities I’ve had to review other types of homeschooling curricula and literature. I enjoy sharing with others things that I have learned along the way. I have people over to see my schoolroom and all of the resources I have collected over the years. I spend time on the phone, and through e-mail, giving advice on setting up homeschools, and sharing organization and teaching hints. I have recently discovered that I can write, so here is yet another outlet for all those ideas crammed into my head.
