It is so easy to get discouraged and feel like others think you’re a freak. Get rid of those ideas and believe in yourself. Stick to your convictions that you are doing the right thing for your kids and everything will work out right.

  2. As a new homeschool mom (beginning next year) the biggest thing I think I have learned so far (which probably isnt much to more seasoned homeschoolers) is to forget what everyone else is doing and do what you feel is right for your family.

That will be my motto as I begin this journey!!

I have had to learn to let go of my own expectations and meet my children where they are. This is our first year of homeschooling and the overachiever in me (and previous teacher), strives to make learning fun and relaxed when I am accustomed to pushing until a certain goal is met. I have learned that the more relaxed I am (with that same goal in mind), the more quickly and happily my children are able to learn the same skills.

Enjoy and cherish every moment you have with your children. I am not so lucky to have the option right now to homeschool since taking custody of my 7 year old grandson. Both my older girls are avid homeschoolers and I support them totally!! My time will come…Lord willing!

Homeschooling starts with birth! Your child is born looking to learn the world and you are there every step of the way. I believe that homeschooling through ‘school age” is just an extension of that. No teacher could know your child better than you do!

Let your child lead the direction. My son might be in 8th grade math… but he’s in college level history and literature. Follow their strengths (and yours).

Get involved! Between homeschool group activities, music lessons, field trips and volunteering my children have more diverse socialization that a public school kid.

It amazes me how homeschooling lets me get back in touch with the important things in life. My favorite place to spend my free time is in my home with my husband and children!

Homeschooling families can relate… when I dig out the cleaning supplies the kids ask “who’s coming over?” :) A messy home is a happy homeschooling home!

This is my first year of home schooling my three boys. So I have looked to the internet for assistance and anything that can help. My tip to you is something that I have learned so far. In my house it seems that it doesn’t matter if my boys are in private school or being home schooled this is the time of year in which they seem to need a little change up. With three of them of way different ages things can turn chaotic really quickly if I was to let them but instead my branching out to the internet for inspiration and ideas on how to make learning and growing more fun for them has proven more valuable than not time and time over.
Have a Merry Christmas and I hope this helps someone.

One thing that is important is to remember you chose to home school, don’t fall into public school expectations. All too often we compare ourselves to the public school, yet I chose to home school because I did not want their goals for my children. 6 children, 2 graduated, and 4 to go!

  29. Relax! That’s the #1 thing…

One thing we are working on is building a separate schoolhouse/room. Nothing against incorporating learning in all of life, but for me personally, I need a place to FOCUS on the learning experience, or it won’t happen as well as it should.

My children aren’t in school yet. I’ve been giving homeschooling some serious thought because the public schools aren’t impressive in my area and we can’t afford private schools. Even though I don’t have any homeschooling experience my tip would be to look for the signs when your children (and yourself!) need a break from studying to dance our their wiggles or play a game of ring around the rosey. Thanks!

My tip- use a lot of games in the elementary years. Make them up, adjust regular board games, word games, number games…it will help your children bond as well as cement their learning.

  36. My tip is just to focus on reading when you’re getting started. Once they’re reading it’s all good! Cuddle on the couch, grab an easy reader, practice. Read out loud, keep it simple :) .
