Field Trip: The Creation Museum

This August we took a family vacation to Washington, D.C., and Virginia Beach. On the way we stopped in Kentucky to visit the Creation Museum, since we had heard good things about it. Our visit did not disappoint. The museum is excellently designed and includes both indoor and outdoor activities.

Upon entering, we were impressed with the friendliness of the staff. We hit the Stargazer’s Planetarium first, which turned out to be our favorite part of the day. When we realize how small the earth is compared to the vast universe, it helps us put things in perspective. Next we stopped at the Dragon Hall Bookstore where we picked up a pack of DVDs and had the planetarium DVD included free.

We went to see Men in White, a satire, in the Special Effects Theater, which was truly a multi-sensory experience. After that, we began The Walk Through tour, which can be done at your own pace. At first it seemed that everyone was reading every pane and panel, but we soon spread out to other areas where we could stop for a photo or keep moving. Be sure to look for Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, and Noah’s Ark on your walk through.

We dined at Noah’s Café, which had reasonable prices and pleasant staff, and sat in the outdoor shaded area to enjoy our lunch. From there we strolled through the beautiful botanical gardens, crossed over bouncy bridges, and paused at the petting zoo, which included unique creatures such as a zonkey and a zorse.

In my opinion, the nicest thing about this museum is that it is creation and biblically-based rather than secular and evolution-based. The stark contrast between the two worldviews was seen as we traveled from the Creation Museum in Kentucky to the Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C., which informs the public that man came from Neanderthals and the like. It’s simply refreshing to find a museum based on the Bible, the Creator, and the science that backs it up rather than the world’s view of man’s origins.

I’d recommend this museum to those who live in the area or those who are passing through. There is plenty for everyone in the family. You can tour at your own pace and spend as much time as needed in both the indoor and outdoor exhibits. It was definitely a field trip to remember!
