Getting to Know Carol

Your family is…
a writer’s gold mine. Fresh material around every corner.
Name 5 homeschool products you cannot live without.
microscope, white boards, duct tape, Classical Kids CD’s and Ditties!
What is your favorite toy as a grown-up?
We get to play???
When you were little, what did you want to do when you grew up?
Be tall
How many houses have you lived in?
Twenty (wow, that surprised even me!–army brat)
Favorite homeschool hero?
Single moms who work and homeschool. It’s astounding.
Favorite Bible verse?
The one I reflect on every time I want to avoid dealing with a major backlog of laundry– “They were naked and they were not ashamed.”
Are you an introvert or extrovert? How do you know?
Serious extrovert. My husband and daughter (both introverts) are made tired by social contact. They need a recharging period. But social contact IS my recharge. I get jazzed by interacting with people.
If you could travel back in time, where would you go?
Too many choices.
What kind of homeschooler are you?
I start out with some sense of where I want to go before the end of the year. But I’m very open to what I call Rabbit Trail Education. If we unexpectedly take an interest in something, I’m fully willing to deviate and run down that rabbit trail till we’ve exhausted our interest in it. This has led to some very unexpected learning events over the years.
Do you have an accent?
I absorb accents. When I’m speaking to someone, given enough time, I start responding in their accent. Southern to southern, German to German. I don’t know what that’s about.
Favorite dessert?
Very boring answer — chocolate.
What are you good at?
Finding something funny in just about anything
What are you horrible at?
Linear thoughts
Tell us something really strange about yourself.
I used to play trombone in the Jazz Band at my highschool. But because I’m so short, my arms weren’t long enough to reach the last position on the slide. So I would extend my arm as much as I could, let go and catch it with my foot at just the right place. I don’t know if that’s clever or sad.
Carol Barnier is a fresh, fun and popular conference speaker unlike any you’ve heard before. Her objective is to have the wit of Erma Bombeck crossed with the depth of C.S. Lewis, but admits that most days, she only achieves a solid Lucy Ricardo with a bit of Bob the Tomato. She is a frequent guest commentator on Focus on the Family’s Weekend Magazine broadcast, has been a guest on many radio programs and is a speaker to conferences nationwide. She’s the author of three books about dealing with (or possessing) a non-linear mind in a linear world: How to Get Your Child Off the Refrigerator and On To Learning, If I’m Diapering a Watermelon, Then Where’d I Leave the Baby?, and The Big WHAT NOW Book of Learning Styles. Her main websites are CarolBarnier.com and SizzleBop.com. You can also find Carol at her blog for moms with distractible kids at SizzleBop. And for fun, see her church humor blog at CarolBarnier.
