Getting to Know Debra

Your family is…
one amazing pastor husband, his wife who wants to do more writing, three boys Energy (11), Compassion (8) and Playful (3). No pets. My quiver is full.

Name 6 homeschool products you cannot live without …
1. The Weaver Volumes from Alpha Omega (it’s all in there and I can wing it on my own if I want to…which I do.)
2. Math Activities for the 100th Day by McGraw Hill (my favorite way to introduce math concepts to my little ones)
3. the NIRV Adventurers Bible (very readable and understandable…I like to use it in my own study too.)
4. the Public Library
5. Skills Evaluation by The Weaver Curriculum from Alpha Omega (a checklist of benchmarks and skills for every grade K-6)
6. youtube.com (seriously, how did we homeschool without it?)

What was your favorite toy as a child
The Crayola Caddy.

What is your favorite toy as a grown-up
Does my journal count?

When you were little, what did you want to do when you grew up?
I wanted to be a poet or just write greeting cards.

How many houses have you lived in?
15

Favorite homeschool hero?
I’ve met a lot of young adults here in Colorado who were homeschooled. They now work in all kinds of fields from landscaping to Lockheed-Martin and Lucas Films. They are my heros.

Favorite Bible verse?
Psalm 27:14 — Wait for the Lord; Be strong and let your heart take courage; Yes, wait for the Lord.

If you could travel back in time, where would you go?
To Great Britain in the summer of 2009 when my husband and I celebrated our 15th anniversary by ourselves.

What kind of homeschooler are you?
a non-conservative, pragmatic, academically-focused, sometimes frazzled, unit-study type.

Do you have an accent?
it depends on who’s listening.

Favorite dessert
Chocolate covered pretzels… or strawberries.

What are you good at?
learning from everyone around me.

What are you horrible at?
cooking steak and going to bed at a decent hour.

Tell us something really strange about yourself.
Everytime I open a cook book I have the urge to pee. You can guess where I automatically do my meal planning now. (Well, you said really strange…)

Debra Anderson has three sons ages 11 and younger. Her passions are education, mentoring, her husband, writing, church ministry and missional living — not in that order. She has her seminary Masters degree in Christian Education, is married to her pastor-husband of 16 years, and resides in their newish home in Denver, CO. In spite of moves between four different states, she has always home educated her boys — even on the hard days. She maintains a blog at www.emergent-homeschool.blogspot.com.
