Handwriting Practice For Your Little Artists

My daughter loves, loves, loves to draw. Yet like most preschoolers, handwriting is new and novel and isn’t quite as fun as drawing animals and people.

A book series that incorporates both drawing and handwriting was recommended to me for use, and I’m so glad I was enlightened to their existence!

The Draw Write Now series was created by Marie Hablitzel and Kim Stitzer, a mother-daughter team who are passionate about making education fun and interactive for children. Kim prompted her mother Marie to publish the wonderful drawing/writing lessons she’d been using in educating her school children for years.

The Draw Write Now series contains eight books, each focusing on three topics. The first book, for instance, is all about farm animals, “kids and critters,” and storybook characters. The drawing instructions are provided in a step-by-step manner, with each new line or shape addition presented in red ink. The pictures are simple enough for children to produce yet extend way beyond simple stick figure art.

There are two to three sentences portrayed in manuscript on the tutorial pages that are meant to serve as copywork for children to accompany their drawings. We use separate drawing and lined handwriting paper, but you can also order the accompanying workbooks so that your children can keep all of their Draw Write Now work in one place.

The series meets national education standards and is a wonderful, fun supplement to regular phonics programs or handwriting curriculum. The books can be used again and again and retails for $15.00 and the workbooks retail for $5.00, so the cost is reasonable as well.

We’re so glad we found out about Draw Write Now!
