Great. This is a good idea. While creating and conceptualizing the game itself, children are able to make themselves a good planner. With this kind of activity, their creativity will be amplified. The skills that they will be needing in creating this kind of games are the same skills they will need in solving problems in the real life.

I just bought a math board games book last night! Thanks for the wonderful directions. This is a great idea for students even in high school. My daughter made a Romeo and Juliet game for her 10th grade Honors English class last year and probably learned more from that experience than all the class discussions and essays! I also remember doing this myself in Gifted and Talented enrichment programs as a child. It takes a certain higher order of thinking skills to synthesize the information instead of just regurgitating it. I think it would make a great group project as well for a family or coop class.

Please don't forget to use and re-purpose games you already have as well. Think spelling or multiplication fact Candyland or Battleship. Any game will do, just review whatever fact or concept you want to discuss BEFORE they get their turn and make rules for what happens if their answer is incorrect.
I re-purpose Tic Tac Toe all the time in this manner.

My kids love playing games, so do I. I always try and buy, find free online and/or make games to go with our studies each year. Here is a link to a game my daughter Jessica and her brother Christopher made. It is on her blog. They had fun making it. It took them days!! and they have had fun playing it many times.

We have not made a game to go with our studies in a while. Thanks for the reminder and the website tips. I am going to have the boys and I make a game... now should it be Renaissance, Reformation, Explorers, Chemistry or should we make one for all 4. hmmm??? We have three Chemistry games I found online free. We have an Explorers game. I guess we should make a Renaissance and Reformation game. We will be thinking about this for sure!!

Thanks for the great idea, Jimmie! My boys love games-- I think it's high time we try our hand at making one ourselves.
