Homeschooling through the eyes of a child
January 2, 2009 by AmyS
As homeschooling parents, we know exactly what we like about homeschooling. But have you ever sat down and asked your child what they think about it?
From Amy’s little Superhero, narrated at age 6:
{Warning, not for those who are easily grossed out…this is a little boy talking, you know }
Why I Love Being Homeschooled
I like being with my mommy all day. I like having freedom and running around and playing. I am always hungry and thirsty so I always want to eat, so I like being at home. Homeschooling is faster than being stuck at school. It’s more fun than being stuck at a table, we can do homeschool anywhere in our house. When I have to sit still I feel like I’ll go crazy. I like to ask questions and if I can’t talk, I feel like I am just going to flop on the floor. I can go to the bathroom whenever I want. I like learning about history, especially the gross things like when the Huns used to keep their raw meat under their saddles and when the Mongols would cut open their horse’s veins and drink their blood when they got thirsty. I like learning Latin and singing songs in Latin and other neat languages. I also get to stay up late reading because I don’t have to get up early. We can go to museums whenever we want and it is not crowded. We can also go have lunch with my daddy whenever we want.
Isn’t this hilarious?! Homeschooling from the eyes of a 6-year-old. My favorite part was if I can’t talk, I feel like I am just going to flop on the floor.
We would love to hear from homeschoolers of all ages about what they enjoy and do not enjoy in their homeschool life!
Have your child write, or narrate for the youngest set, their thoughts. Not only will it be an interesting record of this period in their lives, but it can serve as a great encouragement to both teacher and student on the inevitable tough days that come up throughout the year.
If you have a blog, feel free to leave a link to your story, or simply leave a comment.

Amy,
I’m so glad you are writing again for the online magazine you co-created. That was FANTASTIC. We should do a Video Meme from our kids on this topic. I love it.

My oldest started Kindergarten this year. So did the girl across the street. My son has watched her leave early in the morning and come home at noon. He says his favorite thing about being home schooled is that he doesn’t have to do school as long as she does.

I have an 8-year-old who still flops on the floor when things get too hard.
When I asked my boys what they liked about homeschooling last year, my older son said play time (mostly Lego building) while my younger son said everything.

This was fun! I loved yours – hilarious! I think it would have been better for me to ask on a “good” week – but my boys were able to look beyond the current day and appreciate that they are homeschooled! I will do this every year!
Thanks!
