Do Whales Have Bones?

What does the belly of a whale LOOK like?

What do whales eat?

But wait a minute–whales are MAMMALS, how do they drink sea water?

But wait… the fun does not stop there. Can your kiddos make plankton, krill and plants? Can you open a can of tuna for olfactory purposes? Oh yes, yes you can. Marine Biology: The Living Ocean

So we have covered your basic lesson plans, you know the basic supplies…but wait, the best part. Your kiddos can experience the entire lesson inside the belly of the whale. I was amazed when I walked in on a pre-school VBS in progress when I saw this: 010 006 011

They had created the scene by using the same thing that painters use to protect your floors–plastic sheeting. First you must use a heavy duty packing tape to adhere the edges of two pieces together. Leave opposite corners open–one will be used for entering and exiting and the other will be used taped to a fan to blow that plastic up into a giant bubble and permit air flow.

The fun part–let them make an ocean scene… the krill, the teeth, the plants. Decorate this belly. Then you have the perfect environment to share the story of Jonah. Oh, and don’t throw that plastic out…cover your habitats with it. Bears, rabbits, snakes, the vast ocean, have a beach in the middle of winter by adding fun buckets of sand and toys–complete with bathing suits! Examine caves…make your own adventures. The opportunities are endless.

I would like to thank my friend, Nancy, who expressed that she did not need the ‘credit’ but this is too awesome a project to say nothing. Plus she let me take pictures *after* VBS was over and the plastic had been put away.

OMGosh! That looks like so much fun (and educational). We have already started back to school. Maybe we could do this on our Fall Break.
