Jimmie

jimmie-and-sprite-polaroidI’m a mom of “only” one – a creative 10 year old daughter whose online name is Sprite. My husband and I have been married for 17 years and have lived in China for seven of those years. We began homeschooling out of necessity because of living abroad. In fact, I was a public school teacher before moving overseas, and if we hadn’t moved we probably would have sent Sprite to public schools. But now that we’ve been homeschooling for five years, it’s hard to imagine ever doing anything different. The quality time that I get to spend one on one with my daughter is a true treasure. And besides, I love learning alongside her! If I didn’t homeschool, what excuse would I have to spend most of my day reading history, sketching, and listening to classical composers?

Our lifestyle allows for travel, amazing field trips, cross cultural experiences, and a bilingual environment. We use a Charlotte Mason flavored style of homeschool that is based on living books but includes notebooking, lapbooking, and hands-on activities. I’m terribly biased against textbooks and worksheets and am passionate about teaching in a way that stimulates creativity and real life problem solving.

Personally, I enjoy collecting postcards, my two cats, photography, building lenses at Squidoo (http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/Jimmie),traveling, and cooking from scratch. I blog at Jimmie’s Collage (http://www.jimmiescollage.com/).
