Great article, Lee! I realized somewhere in my second child's high school years that I did not need to test their passions. His passion was history, specifically military history and I slowly began to see that the less I tested, the more he retained. I test very little now. Letting go of unnecessary testing will set your homeschooling free!

Good morning Lee!

In regards to our big kids, I've always thought of myself more as a "coach" than a teacher. Your wording "learning facilitator" is PERFECT!!! I think parents can feel insufficient if they are trying to compare themselves with high school teachers who are standing in front of a classroom "teaching" every day and pouring info into the brains of their students.

Yet as we "let go" of trying to control everything, and allow our teens to delve deeper into the subjects that they are passionate about, they grow and really learn.

Several weeks ago, we ordered DVD's for calculus and physics from The Teaching Company (which are EXCELLENT!!!). We also hooked up with an online "Virtual Homeschool Group" for a "Moogle" class for Saxon's Advanced Mathematics, which we're using along with some "Dive into Math" CDs. And our son is progressing through PowerGlide Spanish. For all of these, I'm not teaching at all, I'm merely checking up on him and talking with him about what he's learning (and I've been amazed at how he can be learning so many things that I've never learned).

Thanks for the good word.

Lee, I love your style of teaching/learning and want to foster the interests of my children as well, though it can be tempting at times to fall into a more traditional mold. I'll be following your blog more closely as my kids head into the teen years.

Learning is absolutely the goal. That's why grades always gave me trouble. In high school I would often say, "I will learn until my grade starts to slip. At that point, I'll focus on the grade."

Learning is a joy... and it should be pursued as such. (Granted, there are bad days for all of us, and we do have to do things that aren't super nice, but that's a different issue [smile]).

I love the opening quote!
