Welcome to this week’s version of Repartee! Freedom is the subject in honor of the 4th of July. I imagine grills nationwide will be smoking all kinds of great stuff tomorrow–I can just smell them now! Isn’t it wonderful when families get a chance to spend quality time together? My husband has both today *and* Monday off so we are super lucky this year.

Here are my questions for you this week:

Something that makes life easier for us is we can have breakfast or lunch or snacks anytime we want. Sometimes I guess the kids are just going through growing spurts and they can get a snack if they need one. At other times they are just so in to what they’re doing, they don’t want to have to stop for lunch at “lunch time” – and they don’t have to. Others are probably more structured than we are – and that’s great if that’s what works for them – but I really don’t set a timer and say they have to be done with a particular subject in 40 or 50 minutes.

The bad thing about this freedom is that sometimes, due to outside activities (which do have a set time table) or other things that come up, some days we spend just doing “catch up” work. But the good thing about this is the kids don’t really complain about it – at least, not to ME. ;)

I love having the freedom to decide what things to teach based upon the interest of my children. My son however says his favorite thing is getting to do his homework in his underwear!

I love having the freedom to teach the kids at their own level. If they need extra help in one area, I can provide that. If they already get a concept, then we can skip pages or even sections. ;o)
I love having the freedom to teach them together. It is awesome to read great literature and then hear what each child got out of it.
I love having the freedom to go on field trips during the school week and also on vacations during the non peak times. This September we are going to maine for a week!! :o )
I don’t love having to keep all the paperwork and also the pressure as to what to save or toss.
I don’t like doing transcripts, though I did survive and my son did make it into college. LOL
I don’t like the expectations that are put on homeschoolers to excel or do things a certain way.
