Repartee: Paying it Forward

reparteeanimated1Please welcome this week’s Guest Repartee Speaker: Nikowa!!

Join her as she shares a concept that is often neglected in our busy lives but is more important than any core subject we set out to teach our children.

“Share with God’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.”
-Romans 12:13

I would like to speak of a past experience. I got super excited about purchasing an Xpress cooking machine. The neat thing is that it was buy one get one free. I was thinking, “with such a large family, two of these machines would really come in handy!”. I started talking to a friend about my purchase that was coming. She said that she wanted one, but could never afford it.
I knew then that I could have offered her the free one, but I was being a little..okay, a lot fleshy and just ignored her.
Here come my Lord later that night. He says to me, “Why don’t you give her the other machine? Even with one, you have what you need. You should really bless that family.”
There is so much more to the conversation between God and I, but i’ve already overstayed my time here in the comment box.
It all came down to this…I gave the free machine to my friend, and my family has gotten along well with just one machine.

That’s what I’m talking about! Great job!

Isn’t it amazing how God (being the Great Father that He is) just nudges us along, telling us “You know you should do ‘this’, right?”

    Thanks for sharing!

Nikowa, This is such a great reminder for me. I tend to do things like make a meal or bake a treat for someone, but my children are not involved enough in that. I need to plan around what they feel inspired to do to pay it forward. Going to ask them right now…:)

I love doing things like this. :D Just in the past week, I put some extra money in the parking meter for the person next to me whose time was about to expire. Last month I brought a couple of chickens I got on sale at the store to a homeschooling friend whose husband was presently out of work. We’ve also given a gas card secretly to church members whose husband was without a job. Last year we paid for someone behind us in line at the fast food restaurant.
The kids love helping out and I try to explain to them that we don’t have to let someone know when we do something. :D

You do not look like an Oompa Loompa! lol! You look fabulous as always!

Night before last I was at the gas station. A gentlemen was a head of me and was buying something. I forget what it was but even with all of the pennies strewn across the counter, he was paying in change, he was short .55 cents. I hardly ever have enough money to get me and my family by, but this was a night that I happened to have the 55 cents. I was glad to help!

I am sure there has been plenty of time were someone’s change helped me. Great topic Nikowa! I love this whole concept.

Great topic Nikowa! And kudos to you for doing the video.

I have found it important to point out “what” we are doing and “why” to my kids. Often, we might do something with our kids in tow and they are not even aware of the reasons behind it or that we are doing something that is important. For example, when I took my boys with me to visit a “shut-in” they had no clue what we were doing until I explained to them why we were doing it. It made them “connect” the action with the principle and suddenly we were a team doing something together.

Nikowa, that was great! I was thinking while I listened to you what a blessing you were to me in checking on me…and taking the time to listen when you knew that I needed a friend. I also try to do that same thing for my friends and family…via email, facebook, telephone, greeting card, etc. Sometimes just a simple, “Hi! I was thinking about you,” can make someones day.:0)
    God Bless,
    Amy

  7. So many people in our lives have been blessings to us, especially in the past couple of years! One thing that we do is share meals with friends of ours on a regular basis. They have been living on unemployment, like we are, for some time now and they have a lot more bills to pay then we do, so their dollars don’t always stretch as well as ours do. Whenever I can I make extra of whatever we are having and then call and tell them I made dinner for all of us, come on over! Another way I try to help is by being available to watch their 2 yr old whenever they need me to.
My husband is really great about stopping to see if people need help when he sees a car broken down on the side of the road. I can’t count the number of times his help was greatly needed and appreciated.
We also encourage our children to “pay it forward” with each other. If you can’t be generous to your own family, how much harder will it be for them to show kindness to others in need?
great topic, I can’t wait to read what others have to add! Sorry so long ;)

This is an excellent idea! So many people have been effected by the failing economy. What a blessing you’ve been! Keep up the good work!

This is something that is near and dear to my heart. :o ) Giving to not get is such a lost art in this nation, and it is nice to read all the great replies here.

    Some ways we have given:
pay a toll for the car behind us
give our farm fresh eggs to people for free
let the person behind me go first
help pay for someone who is scrounging up change
    give gas cards away
    clean up the local cemetary
    given food from our pantry
bring food to people who cannot get out

….there is so much that we can do to help on another. The sky is the limit!! :o ) It not only blesses the person, but I get so blessed by doing it. I pray before I leave the house and askt the Lord to help me bless someone. He is always faithful and it doesn’t have to be something huge, little blessing mean a lot. :o )
