Snowman Art Project

Art was always my favorite subject, I love to “create” things (as if you didn’t know that already). Allowing your children time to be creative is an invaluable part of their learning. It’s been proven that early exposure to visual art, music and drama promotes activity in the brain. It helps children understand other subjects as well, and provides in the development of self-esteem, discipline, problem solving, communication and motivation! And okay, I’ll admit it, I’m a total sucker for all the colorful supplies!

Today I saw a post from a fellow blogger’s art class it reminded me that I needed to incorporate more art into our days! I don’t know about you, but art tends to be the first thing I put off if we’re running behind or if I’m overwhelmed and not feeling like cleaning up the mess that come along with it!
So today I vowed to let loose and we pulled out all of our fun stuff and got to work. Since it was the first snow of the season for us, we decided to paint snowmen.
Item’s we used:
- Watercolor pencils (if you haven’t tried these yet, I encourage you! They are so fun, they enable you to control the color using the pencil, then paint over it with water making it look like watercolor)
- Pastels
- Watercolor paints
- Watercolor paper
- Masking tape to hold the paper in place. (Plus it creates a nice white border around your finished painting, good for displaying work!)

I always put out other supplies just to encourage creativity, but people seemed to keep to the plan at hand.

First we used colored pencils to draw our snowmen, then some mixed watercolor pencils and some plain watercolor.

When the painting was dry, we added white snow to it using a white pastel. Using white tempera paint and a Q-tip also creates a nice snow effect.

The idea for the closeup snowman came from one of my favorite art sites Deep Space Sparkle, if you haven’t visited yet, I highly encourage you to do so!
