In Loving Memory – giveaway
April 3, 2009 by AmyS
The winner is Lorraine of Where Learning begins.
I am so excited to offer this amazing giveaway…my friend and scrapbook author Tania Willis is offering one lucky scrapbooker a free spot in her online “Get It Scrapped” class. The title of her class is In Loving Memory.
This 5-week course takes place once per week from April 9 to May 7.
Words from Tania:
I will help spur you on to create an album dedicated to a loved one you have lost, all the while encouraging you to be gentle on yourself through the process. I will provide prompts and challenges to help you get your thoughts in order and onto the page, as well as suggestions for selecting photos and how to overcome the dilema of not having many photos at all. In addition, page sketches will be offered and a variety of embellishment techniques will be taught along the way.
There’s not a better way to complete a treasured project than in the company of a supportive teacher who is on her own journey of remembrance after losing her mom very suddenly and unexpectedly the summer of 2007. “It’s scrapbooking as a healing therapy, not just art.”
To enter our giveaway, simply leave a comment before Monday April 6 at 10pm EST. The winner will be notified by email.
Nature Portfolio Throughout the Year (giveaway!)
February 2, 2009 by AmyS
“We are all meant to be naturalists, each in his own degree, and it is inexcusable to live in a world so full of the marvels of plant and animal life and to care for none of these things.” ~Charlotte Mason
A few months ago I wrote a review on Barbara Shukin’s Medieval History Portfolio Junior. You can tell from my review that I really really loved this product. So when she sent her new Nature Portfolio Throughout the Year, I was jumping for joy. The Nature Portfolio is created in a similar fashion to all the history portfolios, like a very professional lapbook or creative memory book.
As Mrs. Shukin says,
I conceived and designed the Nature Portfolio as a gentle and creative approach to exploring the natural world. The Nature Portfolio is designed especially for the 6 – 10 year old group as an introductory living science course.
The book is divided up into winter, spring, summer and fall, which are then divided up to focus on various animals, plants and foods in the following ecosystems:
Yards and Gardens- Woods and Fields
- Ponds and Streams
- Desert Lands
- Along the Seashore
Her products truly do appeal to all types of homeschoolers and this one will remind us of the pure delight of getting out and exploring all of God’s Creation. This curriculum does a great job of incorporating narration, copy work, vocabulary and more into an easy to use study guide.
A few main field guides are recommended to use along with the Nature Portfolio:
- The Handbook of Nature-Study by Anna Botsford Comstock**
- Fun with Nature: Take Along Guide
- More Fun with Nature: Take-Along Guide
- The Wonders of Nature Sketchbook by Colleen Monroe
**The Handbook of Nature Study can also be downloaded for free via Google Books.
Made of thick cardstock and contained in a landscape binder, this is a durable portfolio that will last for years. Please see this page for beautiful colored examples of some of the pages.
CONGRATULATIONS Janalyn on winning this giveaway!!!
We are thrilled to be able to give away one Nature Portfolio, a $29.95 value. To enter this giveaway, simply leave a comment before Friday, February 6th at 10pm EST.
What About Socialization? (giveaway)
January 12, 2009 by AmyS
Congrats Megan of Half-Pint House on winning this book!
You have decided to homeschool, you have researched curriculum, bought supplies and are ready to begin when you hear the question, “So, what about socialization?”
As you stutter and fumble with words, you try to remember all of the reasons you decided to homeschool in the first place. Wasn’t socialization one of the reasons TO homeschool? You remember that you want to build relationships and disciple your children. You want to protect and provide what is best. But the words get stuck in your throat and fear suddenly takes rein in your heart. “What if they are right?”
Whether you have been homeschooling for many years or are just beginning this journey, the question of socialization will eventually be asked. How do you answer the critics when you have not been able to adequately form the answers yourself?
What About Socialization? is the answer. Veteran homeschoolers provide solid responses to the tough questions:
- What is socialization anyway?
- Is our home a viable answer?
- How do I shelter and protect while providing opportunities?
- How do I find good opportunities for my children to interact with others?
- How do I evaluate whether they are receiving enough or too much socialization?
- What are some ideas that will help me provide opportunities for my children?
Would you like to win a copy of this indispensable e-book from The Old Schoolhouse Magazine? Leave us a comment sharing some of the ways you and your children socialize with other families. This giveaway will be closed on Friday, January 16 at 10:00 EST.
Memorable Verses for Children (+Giveaway!)
January 5, 2009 by Marsha
We require our kids to remember many things– address, phone number, where mommy left the car in the parking lot this time… In our homeschool we even have them learn information like the times tables (or skip counting), phonics rules, names of US Presidents (or not!), and even what is released when you mix baking soda and vinegar!
However, how many of us require our children to memorize Bible verses on a daily basis– at home? I have been personally guilty of leaving this up to the great teachers at our church, be it in Sunday School or our Wednesday night Masters Club program. With the list of ABC verses below, we can help our children hide God’s Word in their hearts. It won’t take but a few minutes a day and it will be remembered long after they’ve forgotten how to spell onomatopoeia, let alone what it is!

CONGRATS to Dani for winning this week’s giveaway!
As your child is incorporating Bible memory into the ABC’s, it would be fun to include extra projects or books on various letters of the alphabet. This week’s giveaway of the DVD “D is for Dinosaur” will help you do just that! Based on the book by Ken Ham, this humorous and animated look at the Biblical place of dinosaurs will entertain and instruct your child on the amazing truth about dinosaurs, their relationship to the flood, the fall, the ice age and creation– and all in rhyme. The information and gospel is clearly presented and simple for a child to understand.
To enter this giveaway, all you have to do is leave a comment telling me your favorite thing that starts with the letter “D”.
D is for Dinosaur DVD. This giveaway ends on Friday the 9th at 10:00 pm EST.

Celebrate our birthday with tons of giveaways!
January 4, 2009 by The Amies
Woo Hoo! Can you believe it has been a year already? Let’s celebrate by holding TOSGA contests to give away gifts of excess items from our own homes. You know, like: scrap supplies, unused curriculum, hobby materials, books, jewelry, handmade items and more! I already know what I am giving away. I can’t wait to see what everyone else has to offer! We want to thank Kelli Crowe for allowing us to take over TOSGA (The Old Stuff Give Away) where she left off.
Here are the guidelines:
1. TOSGA (The Old Stuff Give Away) will be run just like a blog carnival. You post the information about the giveaway on your blog and then link to it here through Mr. Linky. You must link directly to the post or your link will be deleted. The participants will then comment on your post and you’ll choose a winner on Saturday. Please note in the post whether or not you will ship to other countries.

2. You are free to give away anything that you would like but we do ask that it be something that you would also like to receive. It can be something new, something you created yourself, craft items, books, pampering products (must be new and unopened), or even something in excellent shape that you no longer want but someone else just might. Please include a photo of the item(s) if possible. It must be completely free and you pay shipping. No coupons or anything else that requires the receiver to hand over funds.
You can require something of the participants such as answering a question or writing a post but please keep it simple. In my experience, the more time it takes to enter a contest the less likely people will be to take the time to do it.
3. Place a link to this post on your post. You can also place the button on your site.
