I also have an 8yo who was a late bloomer in the areas of phonics, reading, and writing. He is great at math, as long as we review, review, review to keep things fresh in his mind. He finally started sounding out words and making the connections between all those letter sounds and how they work together to make words att he end of our last school year. He is currently halfway through his 1st grade phonics and reading program, and I am confident that he will be caught up in his reading level by the end of this year, if I don't do anything to mess it up, LOL! Thanks so much for all the fine motor links. Our oldest and youngest son both have had terrible handwriting in the past and I've chalked it up to motor issues due to Aspergers. Finally, after years of practice, and "playing" as you mentioned, their chicken scratch is getting better.
