The Miracle of Life

As a homeschooling family who has primarily chosen this path of education for the opportunity to instill our Christian beliefs throughout our curriculum, it is nice to have the flexibility to add things into our schooling when the occasion arises.  A perfect example of this occurs during the month of January.

During his presidential term in 1983, President Reagan issued a proclamation creating a special day to focus on the sanctity of human life and the fundamental right to life. Since that time, the National Sanctity of Human Life Sunday (SOHLS) has been held on the Sunday in January that falls closest to the day on which the Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton decisions were handed down by the U.S. Supreme Court on January 22, 1973.  This year across our nation the SOHLS will be recognized on January 23rd.

So, what does this have to do with homeschooling?  It provides an opportunity to open God’s Word and talk about God’s wonderful creation.  Start at the very beginning of the Bible and read through Genesis chapter one as God was busy creating light and darkness; sky and water; land and seas and vegetation; the sun, moon, and stars; fish and birds; the animals and finally man and woman.

Man.  Created from the dust of the ground with God bringing forth life with His life giving breath.  Woman.  Created from the flesh and bone of the man.  Human life began on our earth by a creative God and continues to this day through the process of man and woman joining together to bring forth life.

My favorite Scripture about the beginning of each human life is found in Psalm 139, especially these verses:

“For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.  I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.  My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place.  When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, your eyes saw my unformed body.  All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.” ~ Psalm 139:13-16

Through the years the most wonderful way to teach about the creation of human life has been through my own pregnancies.  Having plenty of personal resources available to share with my children made it easy to open a book as we looked at pictures of what the baby looked like and what the baby’s development was at that very moment as the baby was knit together within me by God’s Hand.

With my youngest now seven years old and myself a grandmother, those real life opportunities are no longer readily available. Instead another excellent educational resource available through National Geographic can be used to teach about God’s amazing creation of human life.  “In the Womb” is a documentary following the journey of life from conception through birth.   Although not a Christian production, it is hard not to recognize God’s Hand in each miraculous and amazing detail of the growth and development of each individual baby.   My only caution in viewing this documentary would be to parents who may not want their children seeing the more graphic details of birth as the baby comes to the end of its journey in the womb.

As you consider this special day set aside in January to focus on the sanctity of human life and praise God for the knitting together of the living miracles of your own children, take a moment to encourage those in your community who volunteer to support women who are facing unplanned pregnancies.   Drop off a package of diapers, a plate of cookies, a note of gratitude, or a financial donation to your nearest pregnancy resource center.   Any of these simple gestures offer support and help to those who need to hear about God’s love through His amazing creation of human life and His greater love gift of eternal life and isn’t that really the heart of the matter?

Married in 1980 and still living in the same house in a woodsy rural setting, Tammy Dallmann’s homeschooling journey began in the fall of 1987 when her oldest turned six years old. As rather new believers professing Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, homeschooling was a way to live out the principles found in Deuteronomy 6:4-9. Through all the challenges of life Tammy has stayed the course growing to a family with nine children who presently range from grade school age to college graduates married with children. Her role has transitioned from learning everything she could about homeschooling to becoming an encourager to others coming along the way. Please visit Tammy at Garden Glimpses.
