The Narnia Code DVD–Closed!!!

C.S. Lewis still keeps us guessing

It’s no secret that I love C.S. Lewis and I know so many homeschooling parents share that feeling. We relish the levels of Lewis’ Chronicles of Narnia – the stories that are rife with fantasy and details that only brush the surface of the deeper allegory that still makes my heart skip a beat.

But what if there is even more to Lewis’ world?

“The Narnia Code” DVD, a BBC production based on Michael Ward’s book of the same name, explores a fascinating proposition: that Lewis included a third layer of meaning in his popular tales.

Ward proposes that Lewis, a scholar of medieval cosmology, expressed the characteristics and traits of the planets of medieval cosmology in each of the Narnia books.

Ward’s evidence, originally detailed in the more scholarly work “Planet Narnia,” is compelling, and perhaps no one is more qualified to present the evidence than Ward. He has studied Lewis for a lifetime and he shares Lewis’ passion for literature and his love of God.

While this DVD will no doubt go right over the heads of young children, I suspect older children and teens (and their parents!) will be fascinated by Ward’s assertions. As I watched with my son, we were both convinced that Ward is correct.

I like to think that Lewis would give Ward’s work a wink and nod, without admitting or denying anything. It’s the kind of puzzle he might have shared with Tolkien and others, but it is equally possible that the mystery remained a giddy secret – one that challenges us to think and shake our heads in wonder, while reading familiar words with a fresh vision of the possibilities.
