Tri-Sensory Valentine Dough

February 10, 2009 by Angela

In lieu of candy—give fun playdough this year! This dough engages their smell, sight, and touch senses. Perfect for early elementary ages and children who need work on their fine motor and sensory skills.

Recipe for on the stove playdough:

  • 2 C Flour
  • 1 C Salt
  • 2 t Cream of Tartar
  • 2 T Oil
  • 2 C Water
  • 5-6 drops of red food coloring
  • 1 T peppermint extract

Heat over low-medium heat until the dough becomes thick, making sure to scrape the bottom constantly. When dough becomes too hard to stir turn out onto a floured surface and knead until playdough consistency

It should look like this:

001

Next roll out into 1/2 thickness and cut into heart shapes:

Put each heart into a ziploc bag:

Now comes the fun part! Add 2 googly eyes, 12 beads or small jewels, and 1/8 t of glitter into each bag.

This recipe made the 15 Valentine’s I needed and left plenty for my kids to play with:

This is such a cute idea! I love it! Very creative and seems like it would be lots of fun for a Valentine’s Day craft. Thanks for the idea!

    What a great idea!

And, being the Safety Mom that I am . . . just wanted to mention that if you’re giving these to a group of kids, make sure there are no kids w/ wheat allergies or celiac first. I seem to remember that they can’t play w/ dough made from flour. (Even Play-Doh has flour, I believe.)

Also, red dye allergy/sensitivity. Some children with that problem cannot touch red play clay.

But I LOVE this idea! I’d probably leave out the glitter, but the eyes, oh I just love the googly eyes! And with peppermint oil in it? Oh, YUM.
