Would You Rather…

In our family, we often play a game called “Would you rather?” This is an actual board game now, but we have always done it just while waiting in doctor’s offices, long car trips, etc.

This school year, I am using the idea for writing.

I have a composition book for Coco and once a week or so I attach an index card with a ‘would you rather’ scenario on it. She is required to choose an answer and then explain why in a paragraph or two.

In addition to providing some writing exercise, I look forward to reading her answers, and she usually ends up cracking me up. I think it’ll be even funnier a few years from now when she’s all grown up, which is why I am having her write them all in a journal.

Here are some ‘would you rather’ questions to get you started:

Would you rather…

…have a house made of candy or a house made of money?
…have to eat beans and rice for every meal, every day or cake?
…be a character in Wizard of Oz or Alice in Wonderland?
…have a third eye or a tail?
…be invisible or be able to fly?
…never eat candy again or never watch TV again?
…live next door to Disneyland or have the beach in your backyard?

There’s a sample game online where you can input your child’s age and question area and it generates some pretty funny questions.

Such as: Would you rather have to run 5 miles as fast as you can on a trail covered with a one inch layer of maple syrup or on a trail covered with popcorn up to your knees?

It’s a great place to get more idea starters. The only problem I have with these questions is that both options are usually negative. I prefer to have some fun ones thrown in!

And it’s fun for moms, too!  Tell me…would you rather never have to do laundry again or never have to cook dinner again?
